Cats are strict carnivores, therefore their diet should be based on sources of nutrients of animal origin. They need higher quantities of protein and fat than dogs, therefore it is essential to give them a diet that suits their species.
The options available on the market are highly varied, including dry and wet foods, different textures, etc. The food best suited to each pet should be found, specifically, as each individual in this species can have very different tastes.
Advice from Canun®
THE SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CAT DIETS
- As they are strict carnivores, a complete diet should always be provided which ensures the provision of all the nutrients necessary for their correct development, with sources of high-quality animal protein and good digestibility.
- If we find a good food that agrees with them and covers all their nutritional needs, there is no need to change it, as this can lead to gastrointestinal disorders. In the event of changing foods, always do so slowly and progressively.
- The smell given off by the food should be particularly appetising, as many animals use only their sense of smell as a guide and they will not try it if they find the smell unpleasant.
- In terms of flavours, they are not very sensitive to sweetness, they will reject sourness and bitterness, but tolerate salty flavours well.
- They normally eat many times throughout the day in small amounts and for a short time, as they do with drinking water. Therefore, it tends to be recommendable to make the food freely available, as long as there are no medical contraindications (obesity, diabetes, etc.).
- Their digestion begins in the stomach, not in their mouth. They have a very acidic stomach pH and their intestinal transit is very fast.
